I once met a guy whose last name was Polavaris. He was a small and skinny guy, so it was funny when I heard them say his name, “Ela, Polavaris, pame na figoume…” because he was not Pola, or Vari.
It’s currently 3:28am.. I’m re-mastering my latest DJ mix to send off to print tomorrow morning.. rather, later this morning.. and watching the Thanos Petrelis concert when he was in Chicago on DVD.
So I have these thoughts in my head whenever I’m driving and listening to music.. There’s a huge comparison between Hip Hop music and Greek music (especially the older stuff).
*Side Note* I have a 16 gig flash drive full of music to play in my car, and it’s full of Greek music (Laika, some new stuff, Klarina/dimotika, etc), and hip hop. that’s about it.
I say there’s a comparison because… look at Rembetika.. 90% of the subject matter was killing people, fucking around with women, jail and drugs. If that’s not hip hop, I dunno what is. There’s a Markos Vamvakaris song that’s titled Skila M’ekanes Kai Liono (Bitch you made me fall for you). Didn’t T-Pain do a song called Sprung?
And my previous post of Kolash from Giorgos Zambetas, you could compare that to pretty much anything that Game has released.. Zambetas name drops pretty much every popular singer from his era in that song. Something Game does in every song he does.
tune in next week when I compare Drake to Stelios Kazantzidis.
So.. I’ve been involved with bringing Greek concerts to Chicago for the past 15 or so years.. These are some of the funny and cool things that have happened over the years::
Giorgos Alkaios was making fun of me at the local bouzoukia cuz I was dancing while holding a souvlaki, a few years later when he came back, he bear hugged me when he saw me… I hung out and had frappe with Elena Paparizou, Thanos Petrelis almost set me on fire, Elena Paparizou’s boyfriend was oddly jealous of me, Paschalis Terzis hung out with me in my store, I took Antonis Remos shopping.. Litsa Giagkousi was in my car, heard “Ola Se Thimizoun” from Xaris Alexiou, turned up the volume and was singing in my car and crying… I almost asked Kostas Karafotis what his name was when I picking him up from the airport.. My wifey and I saw Eirini Merkouri in nothing but a towel when we brought her milk to her hotel at 1am.. George Dalaras almost punched me.. Vasili Karras was trying to force feed asparagus to my wife at 4am.. We took the Dionisiou brothers to a crappy diner for breakfast after their concert and they were floored at the fact that they could order whatever they wanted to eat at 1am.. I witnessed Stamatis Gonidis “singing” along with a blues band at Kingston Mines til 5am the night before his concert, and then performed at his show til 5am the next morning. I was djing one night in Greektown after one of our concerts when we brought Fame Story.. one of the singers (Nikos Mixas) had come in right when I was playing one of his unreleased songs, a CDQ copy of it, I might add. He frickin came up to me and asked where I got it. ha ha. Nikos Kourkoulis asked me to come to the remaining tour dates with him, and when I surprised him in Toronto for his show (after driving 8 hours in the middle of the night), he was so excited to see me, he tried hugging me and picking me up. Antonis Remos was making fun of me after he heard I got into a fight with this little pakistani skycap over the luggage. Speaking of Remos, I had to physically pick up his model/actress girlfriend Zeta Makrypoulia and carry her out of the room because some girl from Chicago was flirting a bit too closely with Antonis Remos.. I invited Alkistis Protopsalti to my birthday party, Xaris Alexiou smiled and said hi to me backstage at the Chicago Theater and I ran away like a little kid because I was so nervous to talk to her. I had an lp of Despina Vandi’s single ‘Gia’ that I wanted her to sign, and as I was walking up to her with it, I tripped and almost fell on her. I was listening to Blueprint 2 from Hov with Manolis Mitsias in my car, and he liked it. Kostas Makedonas said he was happy to meet ME because he heard a lot about me. Giorgos Alkaios was in the car with me when I got into a huge fight with some girl, and the next year when we brought him, he remembered and asked if everything was ok. Mixalis Xatzigianni was so happy he hugged me when he saw the size of the bottle of Cutty Sark I brought him (it was part of his rider). Triantafillos brought one of his cds (that he borrowed from my store) to the casino as ID because he wasn’t old enough to get in. yes, it worked. Giannis Kotsiras wanted to speak to me after the concert about the Greek American youth in Chicago. I met a young pre-boobjob Elli Kokkinou when she came as a back up singer for Alkaios… she was very nice and humble. Then we brought her when she was popular, and was a total B-I. I told Antonis Remos that I had a bootleg live concert with him and Gonidis, he was so shocked that I had a copy of it, and then proceeded to make fun of me because he had the video of it. I was running late picking up some of Notis Sfakianakis back-up singers and his manager to get them to the venue, and I was apparently driving like a maniac, so much so that i scared Notis manager. I had to run into the womens bathroom to get a guy out because he ran in to tell Kalomira how much he loves her.. while she was peeing. Elena Paparizou said I was a very good DJ, and looked at me all shocked when I played an unreleased song of hers, a song called Rythmos from her Antique days. We had a convo about it the next morning, she said she hates the song and its meaningless, I told her its awesome because its got a good beat.
**Dalaras almost punching me: I was supposed to take a bouquet of flowers to his dressing room.. The door was closed, but no one was in there. I saw him tuning his guitar. apparently, he didn’t see me. All he saw was some tall goofy looking kid with glasses walking out of his dressing room. he got scared, put his guitar down and was walking towards me with fists. The only thing I could think of was, “holy fuck, Dalaras is about to punch me.” His band members calmed him down and he apologized afterwards.
And finally.. I drove around with Dionisis Sxoinas, and he said I was a dope dj.. he asked me for copies of my mixes.
